education, community service, and sustainable agriculture. A vegetarian, she even enjoys gardening
and growing her own food. She lives in Stoughton, Mass., with her husband Nick, and enjoys running, swimming, hiking, reading, and cooking.
DIStINGuISHED ALuMNuS/ALuMNA AWARD John E. Danielson ’50
John Danielson dedicated his life to service in the yMCA, creating programs for inner-city youth and affecting change through the increasingly responsible positions he held, beginning with that of youth director at the yMCA in Newton, Mass. He then moved to the yMCA of Greater Cleveland, where he eventually became associate general secretary for administration responsible for budgeting, fundraising, promotion, and support of yMCA services around the world. Danielson then served as the president of the yMCA of Greater Boston, where he organized juvenile justice programs and other commu- nity-based activity. He initiated an achievement program for African-American youth and worked
to keep youth out of gangs. His work was so influential that he was named the chair of the North American Urban Group for two years and helped found the yMCA World Urban Network, of which he served as its first chairman. During his time in Boston, he also chaired the Boston Agency Chief Executive officer Group. Danielson spent the last 11 years of his
career as the deputy executive director of the yMCA of the USA. He supervised the national field and medical reserve corps system, managed support, and organized the budget

for the entire national group. He was a staff executive of the North American Urban Group and consultant to the World Urban Network. in retirement, Danielson is active in the
yMCA, remaining involved in the North American Urban Group and the yMCA World Urban Network. He served on the yMCA Hall of Fame Committee, and was inducted himself in 1997. He has contributed to written histories of the yMCA Urban Group and the yMCA World Urban Network. Danielson lives in Kenilworth, ill., with
Gail. He enjoys traveling, golfing, and his family and friends.
DIStINGuISHED ALuMNuS/ALuMNA AWARD Rosemary Shelly Caffarella ’68
Rosemary Caffarella has served many roles in higher education, becoming an expert in adult education and teaching others about the effects of breast cancer. Caffarella was
associate director of extension services at the Worcester yMCA before pursuing her master’s and doctoral degrees in rehabilitation and
adult and continuing education, respectively, at Michigan State University. She then was a teacher and administrator at numerous institutions of higher education. At Cornell University, where she still teaches, she was chair of the department of education, and international professor of education. She has written two books on the topic—
Learning in Adulthood and Program Planning for Adult Learners: A Comprehensive Guide— as well as numerous journal articles, and has been recognized with achievement awards from numerous adult education organizations. A breast cancer survivor, Caffarella
has dedicated her efforts to educating others about the disease. At Cornell, she organized and ran the Malaysian Breast Cancer Education Project, which provides information on breast cancer to Malaysian
women and their families, health care professionals, and the general public, from 2002 to 2010. She has headed the Career Education and Resource Center (CaRE) for all types of cancer patients since 2010. in addition, she previously volunteered and trained for the American Cancer Society’s Reach for Recovery program. She has written and presented on breast cancer education and the Malaysian Breast Cancer Education Project. Caffarella lives in ithaca, N.y., with her
husband, Springfield College alumnus Edward Caffarella ’68. They have a daughter, son-in-law, and two grandchildren. She enjoys reading, skiing, hiking, camping, and travel.
tHE tARBELL MEDALLIoN Carl J. Pavano ’69
Carl Pavano has been a schoolteacher, insur- ance executive, baseball coach, volunteer, fundraiser organizer, and devoted Springfield College alumnus. A long-time member of the David Allen Reed Society, he served on the Alumni Council for nine years, including six as president or vice president. He was a College trustee for five years, serving on the Student Affairs, Audit and Compliance and institutional Advancement committees. He is co-president of the Connecticut Alumni Association, on his class reunion committee, and an integral part of the baseball reunion planning committee. After graduation, Pavano spent 12 years teaching in the Glastonbury (Conn.) Public Schools before beginning a career in insurance. He served as a division vice president for Travelers insurance from 1981 to 1995, was a senior
account executive for Metropolitan insurance Company from 1995 to 2008, and was the MetLife institutional Sales Leader in 1996 and from 2005 to 2008. He served on the MetLife Sales Advisory Council in 1998.
