Shortly after earning a master’s degree in education, Karen Woods joined the Peace Corps to teach English and train teachers in Armenia, presenting lesson plans, seminars, and classes to children and English teachers in the city of Sevan for two years. She remained in Armenia for a third year as a fifth-grade teacher in yerevan. There, she

taught English, language arts skills, math, science, and cultural studies, often utilizing trips to enrich classroom study. Upon her return to the United States, she


was a first-grade teacher at the Martin Luther King Jr. Charter School of Excellence in Springfield before moving to her current position at East Elementary School in Sharon, Mass. Woods has worked to incorporate community involvement into her traditional lesson plans. in Springfield, she implemented a project where students picked apples to donate to a local pantry, and collected and


distributed food at a local community center. She organized a pen pal program between students of urban Springfield and rural Colrain, Mass. Woods remains


devoted to fostering community involve- ment among her students, and has designed and implemented a multi-grade curriculum on
