CHESTER FESTIVAL CHORUS CONCERT
CHESTER CATHEDRAL £26/£22/£20/£10
Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra
Vasily Petrenko, conductor Andrew Foster-Williams, baritone Sophie Bevan, soprano Philip Rushforth, organ
This concert gives us one of the most beautiful works written by Brahms – his Ein Deutsches Requiem. Juxtaposing psalm texts with a traditional requiem text, it was presented by Brahms as an act of consolation for the bereaved rather than as a mass for the dead. The charismatic conductor Vasily Petrenko, the RLPO, and our own Chester Festival Chorus with two of the UK’s finest soloists – deliver this remarkable piece. Reubke’s Sonata, inspired by the words of Psalm 94, and one of the masterpieces of romantic organ music, aptly prefaces the Requiem.
FRIDAY 6TH JULY 13.00-13.50
IAN BUCKLE, PIANO;
What’s on, when and where... RLPO BRASS
SATURDAY 7TH JULY 11.00-11.45
PHILIP HOLLAND, ACTOR; BARITONE, TBC
ST MARY’S CENTRE, £9
Shropshire and Other Lads; A E Housman in words and music
A E Housman’s poems in A Shropshire Lad, published in 1896, appealed to many of Britain’s early 20th-century composers. Here, Ian Buckle and Philip Holland join together again – as for last year’s highly successful Larkin’s England.
ASSEMBLY ROOM, TOWN HALL, £5
Rhys Owens, trumpet 1; Paul Marsden, trumpet 2; Tim Jackson, horn; Simon Cowen, trombone; Robin Haggart, tuba
Start the day dancing with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra’s brass section with music from the Renaissance to the present day. A fun and energetic way to start our day of music! Praetorius, Tchaikovsky, and Khachaturian will keep your feet moving.
12.00-12.45
CRIES OF LONDON I COUNCIL CHAMBER, TOWN HALL, £5
This year’s resident vocal group, the Cries, present a wide-ranging close harmony concert from madrigals to ‘Come fly with me’ via ‘Mari’s Wedding’ and a ‘Hymn to St. Werburgh’, patron Saint of Chester. Pure skill and beautiful sounds.

18.45-20.45
VILDE FRANG, VIOLIN AND MICHAIL LIFITS, PIANO
ASSEMBLY ROOM, TOWN HALL, £20
Already a seasoned performer at major venues throughout Europe and Japan, this young Norwegian violinist, winner of the 2011 Classical BRIT awards and a clutch of awards in Germany, is feted for her superb musical expression and virtuosity - all qualities required for the dramatic music of Mozart; the emotional switches within the last of Brahms’s sonatas for piano and violin; Szymanowski’s evocation of the Mediterranean; and a brilliant sonata by Mendelssohn.
