Following last year’s


extraordinarily successful debut by the tenThing Brassensemble, Tine Thing Helseth returns to Chester with her Jazz Fusion Quintet, TTHQ, formed in 2010. Their appearance at the Festival will be their fi rst in the UK. They’ll take us on a journey through Bach, Piazzolla, Weill and Dave Brubeck via a number of surprising musical pathways; a beautifully contrasted, mellow and enjoyable evening and a perfect end to the day.

Absolution is the fi rst chamber group ever to win a full scholarship to study on the International Artist Diploma Course at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. Brilliant exponents of their instruments, they’ll perform extracts from the major sax quartets of Desenclos and Dubois alongside enticing arrangements of music by Dvořák, Gershwin and Piazzolla.

This wonderful young Estonian violinist and her talented British partner formed their duo in 2006 and achieved success at UK and International competitions. Still at the Royal College of Music in London, Mari was chosen by EMI Classics to be in the fi rst release of their prestigious Digital Debut Series. Their programme will include the music of Salonen, Bartok and Korngold.

Sarah Fox, recognised as one of the fi nest and most versatile English singers to emerge during the last decade, takes us to the world of Broadway Musical Theatre and Hollywood Musicals. Following on from her acclaimed BBC Prom performances with the John Wilson Orchestra, Sarah gives us a glorious evening of hit songs such as ‘Anything Goes’, ’In the Still of the Night’, ‘I’ve Got You Under My Skin’, ‘Ev’ry Time You Say Goodbye’ and ‘Brush Up Your Shakespeare’ to name but a few – a perfect wind down at the end of a busy musical weekend.

Over 1,000 voices will be bringing Chester alive with song over the fi rst weekend of the Chester Summer Music Festival.


This year it has been extended to a weekend, with 6 singing workshops, a Gospel- themed sing-a-long, a community opera, and choirs showcasing there talent on the city streets - there’s something for anyone who loves to sing.


On Saturday, choirs from all over the region will be performing in the city centre from 10.00am – 3.30pm and on Sunday a newly commissioned community opera, “The Chester Giants”, featuring community and schools, can be seen at the Amphitheatre at 1pm and 4pm.

9.45am-11.45am Rock Choir Taster Session with Kathryn Jones Assembly Room, Town Hall, £5 (30 participants)


Rock Choir is known across the UK for their pop, Motown & gospel singing and this workshop introduces you to a typical Rock Choir session. By the end of the 2 hours you will have learnt a song and be confi dent singing in 3 part harmony. It’s perfect for those who love to sing their hearts out as well as those who have never sung outside the shower before!

Songs and Games from Far Away: Singing Adventures for Children and Families with An Croenen


St. Mary’s Centre, £2 per child/Adults free (35 children & accompanying adults)


Join us for a magical afternoon of singing songs from far away. Families will learn songs in other languages from Japanese to Ghanaian and the games that go with these songs. A great way to spend an afternoon with the family.


A fun family focused workshop suitable for all levels of ability and experience and no requirement to read music, suitable for all children, especially 7-12 year olds.

Following their appearance on the streets during the BIG SING! Cries of London’s fi rst workshop relates to their programme in Let’s Hear It! on 7th July (see overleaf). This is a rare opportunity for you to enhance your skills in unaccompanied ensemble singing. You will work on 3 songs from their repertoire covering Renaissance music, traditional and popular songs.


This workshop is suitable for all singers and an ability to read music would be an advantage.

Cries of London Workshop 2 St. Mary’s Centre, £7.50 (30 participants)


In this second workshop from Cries of London, you will work on 2 close harmony pieces based on the music from their programme of madrigals and motets being performed in their evening concert later on the same day at St Mary’s Centre (see page 6). Another great opportunity to work with professional artists performing in the main festival.


These workshops are suitable for all singers and an ability to read music would be an advantage.

Mervyn Cousins, world-renowned choral director, conductor & teacher, leads a practical, ‘hands-on’ workshop covering a wide range of directing skills, including conducting technique, repertoire choice, use of the voice, fun vocal exercises and building a choir. If you lead a choir this is a must!


Ideal for choral conductors and leaders of all vocal ensembles, and for singers interested in learning about the other side of the conducting stand.
