Friday 6th July Chester Festival Chorus Concert

Vasily Petrenko, conductor Andrew Foster-Williams, baritone Sophie Bevan, soprano Philip Rushforth, organ Programme: Reubke Sonata on the 94th Psalm Brahms Ein deutsches Requiem, Op. 45

Continuing the Great Romantics theme, this concert gives us one of the most remarkable and beautiful works written by Brahms. Inspired by and incorporating psalm texts alongside traditional requiem text, it was presented by Brahms as an act of consolation for the bereaved rather than as a mass for the dead. It has become one of his most popular and enduring

works for the beauty of its lyricism. Our performance brings together the charismatic conductor Vasily Petrenko, his orchestra the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and our own Chester Festival Chorus with talented award- winning Sophie Bevan and one of the UK’s finest baritones, the exceptional Andrew Foster-Williams.

To set the stage for this

masterpiece, the programme begins with Reubke’s Sonata inspired by the words of Psalm 94. One of the greatest organ works written in the Romantic period and a fitting prelude for Brahms’s work, it will be played by Chester Cathedral’s Music Director, Philip Rushforth.
