KINGSTON FOODBANK
Kingston Foodbank (
www.kingston.foodbank.org.uk) provides emergency food for local people in crisis. Since opening its first distribution point on 2 December 2011 the Foodbank has provided food to 500 local people and has now opened 3 distribution points. This local Foodbank is part of the Trussell Trust’s UK wide network.
Hidden hunger is an issue in Kingston today with some families struggling to put food on the table. For people on low incomes, a sudden crisis like redundancy, benefit delay or an unexpected bill can mean going hungry. Kingston Foodbank works with front line care professionals and services to meet the immediate need whilst the agencies put in place solutions and further support.
The foodbank works on a simple model. Non-perishable food is donated by the public, sorted and stored and then distributed to people in crisis by a voucher system. Vouchers are issued by front line agencies and ex- changed at foodbank distribution points for 3 days emergency food. Churches, schools and the local commu- nity are getting behind this initiative and over 6 tonnes of food has already been donated. Local business are supporting the initiative like the local Big Yellow Self Storage Company who provide storage.
Clients with Foodbank vouchers can exchange them at the distribution points at Kingston United Reformed Church (Mon and Fri 11am - 2pm), The Kings Centre, Coppard Gardens, Chessington (Wed 9 - 11am) or New Malden Baptist Church (Thurs 10am - 12:30pm).
