Did you know that research shows that exercise can improve brain functioning? It may also slow disease progression through principles of neural plasticity. This is the brain’s ability to make new pathways, learn new skills, even in the pres- ence of a disease like Parkinson’s. This means that EXERCISE IS MEDICINE!
Those with Parkinson’s disease need to know about LSVT® BIG and LOUD! These are innovative treatments that are research based. These programs help people with Parkinson’s to move better and speak more loudly.
Until recently, traditional physical therapy for someone with Parkinson’s has fo- cused on low to medium intensity programs and on compensations for the problems people are having. LSVT® BIG focuses on big movements with a high intensity. It also addresses the sensory problems that exist with Parkinson’s. Someone with Parkinson’s may shuffle while walking or speak softly. But did you know that their brain tells them they’re walking normally and speaking at a normal volume? This program focuses on the feedback for them to recali- brate their systems to know when they aren’t speaking loudly or moving big.
So what exactly is LSVT® BIG? It’s a standardized exercise protocol with a pre- scribed dosage and method of delivery. It can only be provided by a certified LSVT® BIG therapist. It involves individual sessions with the therapist for an hour, 4 days a week, for 4 weeks. The person will also have exercises to com- plete on their own daily for the 4 weeks. Changes in someone’s function is ex- pected within the first two weeks. A recent graduate of the program made this statement, “I didn’t realize how small my world had become.”
The good news is this: People with Parkinson’s can get better! The earlier some- one does this program after diagnosis, the better and longer lasting the results. Yet, improvements have been noted even with people with more advanced Parkinson’s. Research is showing that those who have exercised their whole life, or start to exercise right after diagnosis, have the ability to protect the re- maining brain cells that are damaged by the disease.
