Active Fun Outdoors
during the summer. As for a vegetable garden, I don’t do very well there either. I can always rationalize my lack of a green thumb: must be the weather, bugs, or our busy summer schedule. The upside? It gives me a great excuse to frequent local farmers markets to buy produce! It’s not that I would be a poor gardener; it’s just that
A
I haven’t devoted the time to gardening and tending to the soil, plants, etc. Maybe I’ll add it to my bucket list of things to accomplish. I was examining my pale green thumb while reading Amy Pence-Brown’s
Somewhere Over the Laundry Pile column this month, “Chasing Chickens.” Can I just say that I’m in awe of my urban-rural friends? They’re having fun outdoors, getting dirty, and best of all, introducing their kids to nature while fueling an interest in a variety of agricultural hobbies. If you don’t have a garden but have an appreciation for them, our Family Day Trip
column on page 50 lists a few local gardens your family can visit. And April kicks off several events and activities to encourage your family to be outdoors— Unplug and Be Outside Week starts April 21, and April 28 begins Unplug and Explore the Outdoors. Encouraging kids to be outdoors includes getting ready for summer! Maybe your children have a bucket list of things they’d like to try. If so, our 18th
annual Summer
Camp Guide (page 18) has a wide selection of activities, programs, and day and residential camps to preview. The Guide is also available on our website, so as your kids’ interests change and you finalize your family’s vacation plans, you can always go to
treasurevalleyfamily.com for summer camp ideas. For kids looking to be active and fit, you’ll find a list of some local races, support
groups, and fitness training tips to help kids (and their parents!) who are interested in running. You might remember that I was training for a half-marathon, part of my bucket list for my 50th
birthday. As if I were a gardener, I was devoted to a schedule and carefully
tended to the details of running a successful race. Friends and family were supportive, but I knew anything could happen on race day: inclement weather, not feeling well, a sudden muscle pull or a cramp. But another claim to fame—I beat my goal by almost three minutes. I don’t have my garden planted yet, but maybe I’ll have more time to focus on one now. Regardless of the preparation and care, sometimes outside factors can influence an
outcome, whether it concerns a bountiful garden or a successful race. Such was the case for our April 21st 13th annual Camp & Education Fair, which we recently canceled. But we’re still conducting our annual Cover Kids Search—see page 13 for a mail-in entry form!
claim to fame: it’s April and I still have a
poinsettia plant from Christmas blooming on my kitchen windowsill! It’s a major feat because I can barely keep flower pots watered
