airfield Fifth Grade teachers, Lisa Taylor,

Katie Allen, and Jayme Grounds, are teaching their students more than academics; they are learning to care for others. Beginning in December,

the students donated $170, that would have been used in gift exchanges for each other, to purchase farm animals through Heifer International that went to other countries. In February, the kids

decided to make Valentines to give to Marines in Afghanistan

Military Mystery: Serviceman’s Marker Discovered

A

s soon as Tommy Miller uncovered a military

marker belonging to J.G. Wolverton, Jr. in the field behind Billie (Sneed) and Sam Bournias’ home on Cotton Street in Fairfield, he just had to learn more about the individual. Billie was quite surprised by

the find and had no idea how it could have gotten there. Mr. Miller, who had been

plowing the field to plant sunflower seeds, said he came across it near an old metal tank. From the marker, Mr. Miller

knew that Mr. Wolverton had been born on February 22, 1914 and died February 21, 1954. He knew, too, that he had served his country in the Navy.

found that a J.G. Wolverton, Jr. had appeared on the 1930 U.S. Census in Limestone County as a 16 year old. More details emerged. J.G.

Wolverton, Jr. appears to be buried in Mart Cemetery in McLellan County. Some records would indicate that Mr. Wolverton survived the sinking of Navy Ship U.S.S. LST 750 in December 1944 and was, subsequently, assigned to U.S.S. Lot 1000. The U.S.S. 750 was attacked

by Japanese from the air off Leyte (Asiatic-Pacific Theater), on December 28, 1944. It had only been in commission since June 1944. How the sailor survived is still unknown.
