“We’re in the primary recovery mode in the Bakken,” Harju said. “Most conventional reservoirs hold ‘water wet’ grains of sand. When water pushes through these areas, the water pushes oil off of those grains. In the Bakken, the grains are typically ‘oil wet.’ Flushing with water may push the oil more tightly into the grains. We feel carbon dioxide may work better for secondary recovery in this situation.”


Extracting oil from down deep today requires a mindful eye toward safety and environmental concerns. Simply burning off excess gas is not optimal — so resultant emissions are often a focal point.


Natural gas: Engineered flaring When gas is flared, precious natural gas is wasted. Typically captured and piped, the gas eventually heats homes, feeds chemical plants and generates


power. Without pipelines, remote areas are restricted to either truck hauling or flaring. Formerly, field workers developed their own methods of flaring gas. Steffes Manufacturing sought ways to meet stringent requirements of flaring.


“We set out to create a way to burn the gas efficiently,” said Todd Mayer, Steffes Manufacturing’s new product development manager. “We went right to the field and visited with customers — then made adjustments after hearing their input. Our outcome is far better for the environment and much more reliable.”


Standard flaring destroys 90 percent of gas; engineered flaring with Steffes Manufacturing products destroy 98 percent of excess gas. “This is far better for our environment,” Mayer said. “This has been an engineer’s dream to not only build a product that meets
