Great

Since Saunton Sands Hotel was built almost 80 years ago, guests have fl ocked to the hotel to enjoy traditional seaside pastimes, great food and the incredible views across the beach. In the 1930s photographs, it’s surprising to see how familiar the holiday scenes are, from sunbathing on the beach, to sitting out on the terrace.

British

Saunton

This patriotic year we’re taking a look at the hotel’s Great British past.

Traditional pleasures in a modern setting You can still enjoy tea or coffee in silver pots in the Terrace Lounge with a newspaper, or head to the golf course next door, which opened in 1897. However there are some differences: the crystal chandeliers hadn’t yet arrived in the dining room in 1930, and the long black coats worn by the

waiters have since vanished, although good food remains a popular part of holidays at Saunton.

Classic cuisine The hotel’s past as a traditional British seaside holiday destination inspired its new Great British Desserts menu featuring modern reworkings of classics such as sticky toffee pudding, blancmange and cherry bakewell.

Guests relaxing in the sunshine on the Terrace Lawn beneath the stripey umbrellas on deckchairs - no sunloungers here!

The Terrace Lounge has always been a popular place to enjoy coffee and the papers.
