Beach chic
weddings
Surfy North Devon is home to beach chic wedding style, with couples coming from all over the country to celebrate their love of the coast. Jo Rees got the lowdown on how to create the look from Blue Fizz Events wedding planner Tracy Edwards. Photographs by Lucy Shergold.
The growing popularity of surfi ng and the cool style that goes with it has brought young people from all parts of the country to the surfi ng beaches of North Devon and Cornwall in recent years, and many of them have fallen in love with the culture so that when deciding where to get married, the coast is the natural choice.
‘It’s a growing phenomenon’ says Tracy Edwards of North Devon events and wedding management company, Blue Fizz Events, ‘To such an extent that we’ve even devised one of our wedding themes around it.’ The Blue theme celebrates all that’s wonderful about the sea and coast and gives brides and grooms ideas on how to carry off a beachy themed wedding.
‘Probably the most important thing to get right is the choice of venue, as a beachy theme just isn’t going

to work convincingly in an urban location.’ says Tracy. ‘So if you can afford to take everyone away to a beachside resort or hotel such as Saunton Sands you’re halfway to a spectacular day.’ It may not be as extravagant as it fi rst sounds, especially in the shoulder periods, and when the prices of exclusive use of a hotel are compared to city wedding locations. Of course the best bit is that you get to have all of your friends and family staying in the same location which creates a wonderful atmosphere.
‘Other things to think about are bringing special beachy touches to the event,’ says Tracy. ‘There’s no reason why the bride
shouldn’t arrive in a VW campervan for example, why you shouldn’t dress the room with surfboards, use tropical fl owers such as hibiscus which have the Hawaiian surf connection, or paint beach pebbles with table names. Some of the older
generation might fi nd these ideas a little unusual, but it’s the kind of thing that couples are doing.’ There are also options as to how to execute the day, for example at Saunton it’s usual to get married in the elegant, art deco hotel and then to use the beach for pictures, but it’s also possible to hold a smaller, more intimate wedding at the Sands on the Beach cafe (pictured above, right). ‘The exciting thing,’ says Tracy, ‘is that couples are making their weddings very personal, and good venues and wedding planners will work to make anything and everything work. I was asked the other day if it was possible to have a blessing out at sea on surfboards - we’re still looking into that!’
