Public Safety
In 2011, there were 6,801 calls for emergency services within the City of Avondale. Avondale Fire-Rescue units responded to 5,135 of those calls with the remainder being answered by other cities. Avondale units responded to nearly 1,700 calls in other cities throughout the course of the year.
Fire Prevention
Under the direction of the Fire Marshal, Avondale Fire-Rescue Fire Prevention members performed 2,789 fire inspections, 289 plan reviews and investigated 26 fires. In 2011, four structures and/or homes were saved by the activation of automatic fire sprinkler systems.
Community Education
Avondale Fire-Rescue provides a vast array of educational opportunities for the citizens of Avondale ranging from fire prevention and safety presentations within our schools, to formalized training programs (CPR, CERT, babysitter workshop, teen survival camp, etc.) to educate and prepare the citizens in the event of an emergency. Through these community outreach efforts, Avondale Fire-Rescue members educated 12,974 men, women and children within the City of Avondale.
In 2010 fire units were dispatched to 5,965 fire or emergency medical incidents in Avondale. Eighty-one percent of those calls were emergency medical calls. Avondale units also responded to 867 emergency incidents in other jurisdictions. There were 56 reported building fires, 439 responses to automatic fire alarms and 427 vehicle accident responses including 17 that involved trapped persons, hazardous
materials or fire. The department provided fire and emergency medical response at Phoenix International Raceway, including at two NASCAR races which attract over 100,000 race fans over each of two weeklong events. Avondale Fire/Rescue also provided numerous opportunities for fire prevention and life safety education, including commercial life safety inspections, drowning prevention and babysitter workshops, CPR and First Aid classes, child car seat inspections and more. Department personnel also participated in a variety of community events and activities and hosted open houses at all Avondale fire stations. Avondale Fire/Rescue personnel also took part in training 65 residents to be CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) volunteers, and provided over 1,800 immunizations to 755 children.
