Avondale Celebrates!


The city’s seventh annual Resident Appreciation/GAIN Night, held at the Randall McDaniel Sports Complex, drew 3,000 residents who came to learn more about city programs and services, as well as Block Watch/Crime prevention messages. Other special events during the year were made possible thanks to partnerships with other organizations, sponsorships, donations, and participant fees. The events included a Memorial Day Ceremony, Veterans Day celebration, Tres Rios Nature & Earth Festival, the IMS Marathon and a successful Writer’s Conference. The city also began planning for the 2012 Arizona Centennial Celebration to showcase Arizona’s – and Avondale’s – rich historic past. The “Tale of Two Cities” Centennial Parade and Festival, an event jointly hosted by the

City of Goodyear and Estrella Mountain Community College was planned for February 25, 2012, which culminated in a successful event with over 80 parade entries and over 5,000 participants. Avondale Library’s Oral History Project was also approved as an official Arizona Centennial Legacy Project by the Arizona Historical Advisory Commission (AHAC).


Other Centennial events lined up for 2012 include two significant projects, the Goodyear Farms Historic Cemetery, which serves as the final resting place of Goodyear Farms workers and their families. Various groups and individuals have also rallied to help with the city’s plan to build a trail up Monument Hill, Arizona’s Initial Point which is in Avondale.
