Nick Rodina’s award-winning bagger started


out as a 2000 Harley-Davidson Electra Glide up- dated with a long Arlen Ness fender and LED light- ing frenched into the fairing and saddle bags. Over the years, the bike was further modified with ad- ditional chrome and custom paint. While the bike looked good, it had suffered from a rear-end sway at 70 mph that never seemed quite right to Nick. Several routes were taken to remedy the prob-


lem over the years including the installation of a True-Track chassis stabilizer, different wheels and tires, even new bushings in the swing arm and new bearings in the neck; still nothing corrected the problem. Finally, Paul and Chris at Turkey Creek Cycles advised Nick it was time to bite the bullet. They proposed major surgery in the form of adding rake to the touring frame in an effort to stop the rear-end sway. Nick would never be able in good conscience to sell the bike to anyone the way it was. The consensus was the frame was proba- bly twisted, so the plan to rake the frame and at- tempt to straighten went forward. While the frame was being modified, a 95


cubic inch engine complete with a nitrous system built by TCC replaced the original factory piece. The 70 mph sway was gone, but was now re- placed by a sway at 90 mph. While a lot of folks would not have to worry about a sway at that speed, Nick likes to get on down the road in a hurry. He sees 90 mph frequently. Nick had re- signed himself to the fact that he would just have to live with the swaying issue until he received a call from Paul Harper one day. Paul had learned of a repossessed bike through a friend that had es- sentially been stripped to the engine and frame before the repo man got it. Paul advised Nick the remains of the bike were a great deal and might just be the answer to aggravating swaying issue. While a recent divorce had left Nick financially


drained, he managed to scrape together the funds to secure the frame and to get the ball rolling on the swap. When Nick asked Paul and Chris how the process was going to go they simply told him, “We got this.” “We have some new things that we want to try; just bring money.” Nick shared that those words were “a bit scary to say the least.” In a nutshell the whole process went something like this. The new frame was stretched 1 inches and its neck received an additional 10 degrees of rake. The engine was transformed into a 113 cubic inch monster through the addition of some S&S parts and Larsen cylinder head magic. The nitrous sys- tem from the previous engine of course, came along for the ride. Everything that could be used from the original bike made its way onto the new frame. The bike now sports a killer audio system complete with rear view mirror action coming from a rear mounted camera transmitting to the


video screen of the head unit. The spec sheet for this bike is a smorgasbord of top shelf parts and pieces. The paint process on the bike took on a life of


its own. The paint chores would be handled by Nick and TCC’s good buddy Carlos of Los’ Garage. Nick received some basic outline drawings of a bagger with a raked frame and stretched saddle bags from Jim Franklin. He used these drawings to mock up the paint scheme that had been rolling around in his head. After he completed drawings of the three tone paint design he met with Carlos to go over them. One of the colors was orange, but they couldn’t decide on a color of orange until Carlos reached deep into his cabinet and pulled out the Holy Grail of paint: 2003 Lamborghini Or- ange. There was only one catch with this paint, however; it was owned by a mutual good friend Chad Kolman. After some negotiating they reached a deal and the base color was born. After the orange base coat was laid down, the graphics were started. It was decided that Nick’s design would be laid out on one side of the bike, Carlos’ design on the other. Carlos called Nick over and showed him the side he designed then spun the bike around and showed his own design. Need- less to say, score Nick 0 Carlos 1. Next was the top color. Nick picked 3 colors of black and Carlos picked one. It worked perfectly with the orange. Score Nick 0 Carlos 2. Now came the time to choose colors for the


pin-striping. Nick kind of threw his hands up in the air at this point. Carlos suggested many colors and Nick was stubborn about this one. They took the chosen colors to Bob Bond, award winning pin- striper. Bob used his 50 years striping experience to make the final call on the stripe colors and the end result is a work of art. After the paint was completed, the mad dash


to the finish began. Paul, Chris, Donny Toomay, and Nick began assembling the scooter, working at a quick yet detailed pace. The build required some late nights fueled by pizza and cold beer. TCC set a goal and didn’t falter along the way. The crew’s words to Nick: “We will have this done by the Wide Open Show” seemed a very tight time frame to work within. The show was only a few short months away. True to their word, the scooter was finished on schedule. Nick would like to add special thanks to Paul
