Watering Lawns May Become a Thing of the Past

The effects of La Nina conditions bring us the mild winters that we relish and the hot dry springs and summers that we mourn. But there is something far more ominous than our comfort to think about. Recent research— as well as an overall drying and warming of the Texas climate— has led water planners to wonder when that next big drought will happen.

For most of our history we have treated water as if its supply was unlimited, and that must change, say state planners who are recommending $53 billion in improvements to prepare the state for the perfect storm— a record- breaking drought in the next 50 years and Texas' expected population growth expected to increase from the current 25 million to 46 million by 2060.

Damming water, one of the cheaper sources and the state's traditional way of increasing supply, can no longer be the standard answer. Water planners say there are few good sites for reservoirs left in Texas and that the state needs a more diverse water portfolio relying on a range of strategies such as water reuse, storing excess water in aquifers and desalinating seawater as outlined in the State’s new plan to hedge against the impacts of drought.

An article in the Austin American Statesmen reported that it will cost $5.6 billion upfront to implement, plus additional, undetermined costs to operate the 310,000 acre-feet per year of new water that the water plan says the state will rely on by 2060. Delaying action until such time that the situation becomes an emergency would cost even more. And the delay could also have dire economic damage caused by a water shortage; planners estimate annual economic losses of $11.9 billion annually from not meeting water
