ASSOCIATION OF

PLAY INDUSTRIES

The Children’s Play Information Service, also known as CPIS, or the Play Library, is the national information service on children’s play.

Children’s Play Information Service – informing the play sector

CPIS is unique – there is no other national library on play in the UK, Europe, or the US. CPIS has been part of the library at the National Children’s Bureau (NCB), the leading national charity which supports children, young people and families, for the past 12 years.

CPIS is funded by the Association of Play Industries (API) and Play England, but it is an independent information service in the sense that it aims to provide objective information, not serving any particular organisation. This is what gives the service value and authority – you can trust our information.

CPIS exists to provide an information service to the whole play sector, which is very broad! Our key user groups include local community groups, such as Friends of the Parks groups, local authorities and parish councils, schools, play providers, playworkers, play organisations and the play industry.

What do our users need information about? Well, the subjects and types of information are as varied as the users themselves. We get asked for information on all aspects of children’s play, including: • funding • research • contact details for play designers, play consultants and play equipment companies

• safety and risk • playwork • play design • legislation and policy • play in schools • improving/developing play provision • training and qualifications

Our services include an enquiry service – if you need a literature search, quick facts, or details of the latest play research just give us a call or email. Our website www.ncb.org.uk/cpis contains lots of useful information, including our series of

factsheets on key play topics. For busy professionals and practitioners who need to keep on top of the latest news, policy and other developments in play, our free e-newsletter, Children’s Play Update, is a useful way of keeping up to date. Whatever the current policy agenda, children’s play remains a priority for children and for the professionals that work in play. If you do work in children’s play, and you need information – make CPIS your first port of call. 
