PLANNING AHEAD: Susan Eissinger, CUSD associate superintendent of instructional ser- vices, is working on standards to replace No Child Left Behind. Submitted photo
required paperwork and CUSD must await a final decision, but officials are confident NCLB will be waived. In the mean- time, local schools will con- tinue to set high standards for students and teachers and strive for excellence throughout the system, say administrators. “We’ll move forward with some aspects of NCLB until we
hear about the waiver,” explains Susan Eissinger, CUSD associate superintendent for instructional ser- vices who is working on the transition away from NCLB. “But we’re shifting to a more dynamic method of measuring student progress that reflects improve- ment rather than meeting a single standard of profi- ciency. This will heighten accountability for students and teachers and offers a much more individualized approach.” State and federal officials have not offered a time-
line of when the waiver decision will be made, but most agree that NCLB will soon be a thing of the past. “It’s wait and see as far as the final word coming
down,” notes Eissinger. “But we want to ensure parents are well-aware that this is underway and that it’s a posi- tive development for our schools and for our students.”

Cupcakes, From Page 1 “Cupcakes are pretty, fun and so personal-
ized,” McKenzie says. “They give people such a variety of choices.” McKenzie purchased the former Egg & I
café last year and transformed it into The Kitchen. The restaurant serves traditional American breakfast and lunch fare from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. every day. This month, the Chandler native is expanding her business hours into the evening to showcase the new Cutie’s Cupcakes and Coffee section of the restaurant. “Our complex has a big following because
of The Living Room wine bar, and a dance studio,” she says. “We’re hoping to create more nighttime buzz by adding an ice cream and pastries feature in the restaurant, plus wireless Internet access and evening hours. This should provide a new place in the neighborhood where families can enjoy day and night outings.” The Kitchen/Cutie’s pastry case will feature homemade sticky buns, brownies and gourmet cupcakes. to purchasing The Kitchen
McKenzie owned a wedding and event planning business and served as the events coordinator for the Women’s Ministry at Cornerstone Christian Church, both in Chandler. She expects to continue to serve her hometown. “Our next steps are to plan an open

Rd., Chandler. For more information, visit www.face-
