Century Ride wheels around Chandler

Participants must complete the online registration and

waiver forms before midnight Wed., March 28 to take part in the Chandler Century Ride, the city’s largest cycling event, held on Sat., March 31. The all-ages event celebrates Chandler’s 100th birthday with

three noncompetitive bike rides of varying distance showcas- ing the city and promoting bicycling in the community. “We wanted to offer something for everyone, so that we

could honor Chandler’s 100th birthday with the biggest bike event in the City’s history,” says Ann Marie Riley, the City’s Transit Services coordinator and organizer of the event. “We also have a vendor expo at the park that will have refreshments, information booths and activities for kids.” The Century Ride offers a family friendly 7.4-mile ride

along the Consolidated Canal on the city’s Paseo Trail, a 39- mile intermediate route and a 65-mile advanced bike route through Chandler and adjacent communities. All rides begin and end at Chandler’s Tumbleweed Park at 2250 S. McQueen Rd. Rain or shine, the 39-mile and 65-mile rides begin at 7 a.m., and the 7.4-mile family ride starts at 9 a.m. Since the rides are not races, there will be no police escorts

All other Chandler Routes are still operating on

normal service. These include: 96 Dobson, 104 Alma School, 112 Arizona Avenue, 136 Gilbert, 156 Chandler, 540 Express, 541 Express, 542 Express, and Arizona Avenue LINK. East Valley Dial-A-Ride is oper- ating as normal, as is METRO Light Rail, except for the affected bus routes serving the rail stations. Bus riders are encouraged to evaluate alternate

travel options. Go to www.SharetheRide.com to reg- ister and find a carpool partner or seat in a vanpool.

Check with neighbors, friends or co-workers to make carpool plans or for help in running errands. Ask your boss if you can telecommute. Consider taxi service for necessary trips. Passengers can get updates at ValleyMetro.org,

www.tempe.gov/tim/TempeTransitLaborNegotiation s.htm, www.chandleraz.gov/transit, or call Customer Service at 602-253-5000 during business hours. Updates on labor negotiations are available at www.phoenix.gov/publictransit/strikeinfo.html.

or road closures and cyclists must obey all traffic laws. Participants must wear helmets while participating. There is no fee for the 7.4-mile family ride, but the 39- and

65-mile rides cost $35 per person. Onsite registration is from 5:30 to 6:30 a.m. at Tumbleweed Park, with an increased participation fee of $45. To find route maps or to register, follow the links at
