Cool cats jam at San Marcos Join local “Cats & Jammers” from the Arizona Classic Jazz Society
(ACJS) from 1 to 4 p.m. Sun., March 25 at the Crowne Plaza San Marcos Golf Resort, 1 N. San Marcos Pl., in downtown Chandler. The “cats” at this event include local favorites Cheryl Thurston, Roy
Calhoun, Gary Church, Joe Hopkins and Rich Smith. Trombonists Glenn Bach and Dave Richardson round out the group, with other attending jammers invited to play. ACJS members pay $10 and nonmembers $15 for the event, while stu-

The doctor of Dutch jazz Catch some hard-driving two-beat traditional jazz, West Coast-style, with Pieter Meijers from 1 to
4 p.m. Sun., April 22 at the Crowne Plaza San Marcos Golf Resort in Chandler. The Dutch reed player is the leader of High Sierra Jazz Band, one of the most popular jazz bands in the United States. Meijers rises out of the very active jazz scene in the Netherlands, which has followed similar
paths to jazz in the United States. He started playing at age six and took only one hiatus to pursue his doctorate degree in nuclear chemistry and physics. The musician is known for entertaining audiences with both his music and sense of humor. He appears as part of the Arizona Classic Jazz Society’s (ACJS) monthly jazz party, backed by
members of the 52nd Street Jazz Band. The event costs $10 for ACJS members, $15 for nonmembers and is free to students or anyone
