Youth Exhibit shows off student art The 13th annual CUSD Art Masterpiece 6th Grade
Art Show is on display now through Tue., March 27 at the Downtown Chandler Library. The exhibit includes over 400 pieces of original art-
work created by sixth-grade students throughout the Chandler Unified School District. Art Masterpiece is an all-volunteer art enrichment program sending guides into classrooms to teach
students about art using prints or reproductions of famous masterpieces. Students create hands-on art projects that reinforce what they have learned. The Downtown Chandler Library is at 22 S. Delaware

Team effort Art, writing contest deadline extended The third annual Young Artists & Authors Showcase
for Chandler students ages 13 to 18 to express them- selves through art and literature have until Fri., April 6 to submit their entries. The contest is sponsored by the City of Chandler’s
Sister City affiliate, Chandler-Tullamore Sister Cities (CTSC),
representing the “twinning” between
Chandler and Tullamore, Ireland. The Showcase theme for 2012 is “Youth as the Catalyst for Change,” or how communication, technology and individual initiative can lead to dramatic social change. Young Artist entries must be no larger than 24 by 30
inches, including matting. Watercolor, oils, pastels, pen and ink, charcoal, photography, two-dimensional mixed media as well as computer-generated art are all acceptable media. Entries must be submitted with a $5 entry fee. Young authors, essayists and poets are encouraged to
creatively express the theme with essays of 500 words or less and poetry of 25 lines or less. All entries must
be typed in English and submitted with a hard copy and a digital copy. Judges will evaluate on theme inter- pretation, composition and grammar. Entries must be submitted with a $5 entry fee. A reception will be held during the Downtown
Chandler Art Walk from 6 to 8 p.m. Fri., April 20 at Vision Gallery, 10 E. Chicago St., to celebrate Chandler’s young writers and artists. One piece of art- work and one essay from the Chandler entries will be submitted to Sister Cities International where 10 final- ists are chosen. GOT CHOPS: Fourteen students from Arizona Isshinryu Karate Academy in Chandler placed in the top four in each of their divisions at the Arizona State Karate Alliance state tour- nament, held recently in Phoenix. The students have been invited to participate in United States Karate Alliance Nationals on Sat., March 31 in Albuquerque, NM and will also travel to Las Vegas in April to compete at the USA Junior Olympics.
