Business ICAN Fun Run, 5K open to sponsors With a goal to raise at least $6,000 for ICAN, a
501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides programs for at-risk youths in Chandler, the 5th annual ICAN SanTan Sun Family Fun Run & 5K fundraiser seeks sponsors and runners. The event is held Sat., April 14 at Southern Chandler’s Tumbleweed Park. “Sponsors are sought to provide health and other
information at tables under the McDowell Mountain Pavilion,” says Laurie Fagen, publisher of the SanTan Sun News, a co-sponsor of the event. “Any business that wants to sponsor food, goodie bags or provide information at a table just means more money to help ICAN help kids ages 5 to 18 years old learn to be pro- ductive, self-confident and responsible citizens.” Already onboard is CoBiz Financial, which donated

to downtown Chandler have until 5 p.m. Wed., May 9 to complete a City of Chandler Request for Proposal (RFP) for a currently empty location in a City-owned building known as the Blue Peacock and located on the historic square at 51 E. Boston St., north of City Hall. According to a news release, the City is looking for a

Registration begins at 7:15 a.m. The Fun Run and Walk, suitable for families, children, adults and seniors, starts at 8 a.m. and will be on a route through Tumbleweed Park. The 5K begins at 8:15 a.m. and traverses the concrete Paseo Trail and back. Each paid participant receives a goodie bag, and
$2,500 towards the event and is planning to bring 100 runners. In addition, 4 Peaks Racing will handle the 5K portion, providing chips and handling timed race results for the 3.1-mile race along the Paseo Trail. A family-friendly walk or run around Tumbleweed Park is also offered for children, adults and even dogs. Sponsors already registered for the Fun Run include
Z-Ultimate Studio, Subway, Swim Kids, Advanced Bank & Neck, Pacific Dental and Tammy Mills boot camp. Sprouts store will provide water and bags, and raffle
prizes being donated include from Marnie Brookins of Glassmelts, Beachy Bags, Mermaid Heart Designs and Exercise Rhymes. Other sponsors include the City of Chandler and SanTan Sun News.

concept that will complement the current businesses in downtown, ideally bringing an element of entertainment or retail in order to increase the number of activities and draw new patrons to the area. “Downtown Chandler is a pedestrian-friendly urban
environment with unique architecture and character,” says Public Information Officer Jane Poston. “It is increasingly growing as a destination for shopping, dining and events and has a vacancy rate of about 4%. This is a rare oppor- tunity as locations on the historic square are at a pre- mium.” The space formerly housed the Blue Peacock gift store,
and was later purchased by the City of Chandler to build a breezeway from the square to a future Chandler Museum, which was to have been located next to City Hall. A Chandler citizens’ task force first identified the need for a new museum in 1982, and voters passed two bond elections in 2004 and 2007 in support of a larger building that serves the entire community.
