Chevrolet Sonic There was a time when it seemed Detroit’s Big Three made sub-
compact cars out of spite. They were underpowered, uncomfortable, and unreliable. Those days, I am happy to report, are long gone. The Chevrolet Sonic (and its larger cousin the Cruze) are a testament to American car companies’ renewed focus on economical transporta- tion. The Sonic replaces the Aveo (which hailed from GM’s Korean factories) and is a homegrown success. We tested the four-door hatchback (it is available in a sedan model as well) and were impressed by both its roominess and the peppy 1.4 liter inline four cylinder engine that puts out 138 ponies, while sipping a gallon of gas every 40 miles in highway driving. The Sonic had no problem accommodating a six-foot passenger up front who marveled at the interior use of space. In the rear, Sonic swallowed seven bags of gro- ceries with ease. This American-made subcompact gets a lot right, and deserves a close look from buyers. MSRP: $14,500
