of Greenhorn Creek Golf Resorts monthly wine tasting events at the resort’s CAMPS Restaurant. The featured local winery for the month was Prospect 772. Winery founders Ron Pieretti and Wendy Sanda graciously poured a selection of their fine wines while chatting up the background on each sampling. The winery’s first vintage was in 2005 with release in 2007. This young winery sits on a bucolic 25 acres a few miles west of the Greenhorn Creek Resort with three acres currently planted. Although this area of the Mother Lode is teeming with wineries, “We are the only winery in Angels Camp” notes Pieretti. The owners happily discussed their

wines, each with a playful name. First to cross the palate of tasters was The Brat, an elegant red of 60 percent Grenache and 40 percent Syrah, a favorite of Mother Lode winemakers. The name’s origins come from the predominance of Grenache, a temperamental grape that basically can be a challenge to cultivate as it is fragile to the elements during bloom. The juicy tannins of this wine make it a perfect accompaniment to pasta or beef. Next up was The Brawler, a Syrah-


based blend to which the winemakers add a little Viognier, getting complexities beyond Syrah by itself. Oak barrel aged for 18 months, the result is a big, bold wine with taste points of ripe berries and apricots. Pour a generous glass next to a sizzling grass-fed steak from CAMPS kitchen, and you have a perfect pairing. Last, but certainly not least, was The

Instigator. As Wendy explained, “the name comes from our introduction to the Rhone Valley in France. Having been introduced to the wines of Hermitage and Cornas, we find that Syrah is the ‘Instigator’ of our Rhone adventure and the backbone of all of our blends.” Scoring 93 and 92 points from Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast respec-

tively, The Instigator is a bold, dark wine that will stand up as a fine accompaniment to the heartiest of dishes. Following the delightful tasting, complimented with fine


appetizers from the skilled kitchen staff, we enjoyed a wonder- ful meal. The CAMPS kitchen sources many of their ingredients locally – and the tender 14 oz. Rancher Rib Eye with a Smoked Spanish Rub and scalloped potatoes did not disappoint. The marinated skirt steak arrived sizzling with crispy onions, red potatoes with cheddar and a hint of bacon. Happily, we saved a bit of room for dessert. I consider myself


a bit of a connoisseur of tiramisu, and both the presentation and flavor profile of CAMPS’ offering makes my top five. For groups looking for a special spot for golf, wine tasting


and fine dining – a corporate retreat perhaps or a mini-family reunion, the resort’s Caddyshack offers premiere accommoda- tions. The airy five bedroom building featuring a horseshoe pit, barbecue area and fully-equipped kitchen is just a stone’s throw from the Greenhorn fairways. Bon appetite!
