CHAMBER TESTIFIES AGAINST MINIMUM WAGE HIKE On March 8, 2012 Christopher R. Brown, CAE, testified before the Senate Labor Committee in opposition to legislation that would increase the minimum wage to $8.50 an hour with future adjustments tied to the Consumer


Price Index. S-3 is sponsored by Senate President Stephen Sweeney and Senator Richard Codey.


During his testimony, Brown discussed two distinct issues as to why raising the minimum wage at this time would have a negative impact on the businesses in Southern New Jersey. Brown discussed how the last time the legislature had


raised the minimum wage was in 2005, when the unemployment rate was 4.5%. He then highlighted testimony from then-Chamber Board member William Eubanks, III, who subsequently closed his KFC restaurants in New Jersey shortly after the minimum wage was increased.
