O, HEREweare in 2012 –the year of the London Olympics –and what an exciting event it looks set to be.


My two sports mad sonswill be glued to the


televisionthroughout the whole event, which willbejoined by 15,000 athletes from 200 countries. As wellasthe athletes afurther 20,000


membersofthe media will head to London and its surrounding areas, along with hun- dreds of thousands of visitors and spectators –awelcome boost for the local economy. Ican’tbelieve how the years have flown by


since London was selected as the hostcity backinJuly 2005, after defeating Moscow, New York City,Madrid and Paris during four rounds of voting. It has also amazed me at how quicklyplaces have been transformed withthe construction of venues including the OlympicStadium and village in the capital, and others in surrounding areas such as the Lee Valley White Water CentreinHertfordshire. The openingceremony for the Olympic


Games willbeheld in just over five months time-onJuly 27 –and will include 26 sports covering atotal of 39 disciplines. While the closingceremony on August 12 will mark the handover of the games to the next host city, Rio,wewill still be able to enjoy events cover- ing 20 different sport during the Paralympic Games, which run from August 29 to September 9. The event willmean London becomes the


first citytohost the modernOlympic Games three times, having steppedinatthe last minute for its two previous events in 1908and 1948. The first following the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in Rome in 1906 and the second as the lastminute host for the first games after World WarII. Letshope this event has the same morale-


boosting effectonthe country as we enjoy the games, looktothe futureand benefit from the legacy of the event.
