◆ AFTER 48 years and morethan 200 chil- dren, Ellen and Roy Player have retired from fostering. The Basildon couple (pictured right), who still have 12 grandchildren and one great grandchild to keep them on their toes, looked after children from the age of just seven days up to 16 for Essex County Council. Ellen, who helped provide courses for would-be carers and takes part in voluntary work for the Girls’ Brigade and families with disabilities, became an MBE in the 2008 New Year’sHonours List for her enormous contribution to the local community. ◆ Plans to invest morethan £1million into the Towngate Theatrehave been approved. Other the coming months morethan £100,000 will be spent on improving the catering and bar area, while afurther £900,000 will be spent over the next five years improving arange of things from seat- ing to dressing rooms.


◆ Draft plans for the regeneration of Basildon town centrehave been approved for asix- week consultation. The plans, which will transform the town over the next 20 years, include anew eight to 12 screen cinema in a remodelled East Square, arelocated street market, morethan 1,500 new homes, anew college, and major improvements to St Martin’sSquareand Town Square.


◆ Organisations and clubs arebeing urged to take advantage of funding available for Olympic themed events and activities in the run up to the 2012 Games. ◆ Young Basildon women aged 16 to 25 – one of the hardest to reach age groups –are being encouraged to get active and take up anew sport this year.The Active Women project, which aims to give residents the chance to take part in asport for free, is part of the national 2012 Olympic legacy goal, is funded by Sport England and run in Basildon by the Positive Futures team. Activities include free all-female group fitness sessions such as body combat run at the Sporting Village, parent and toddler sessions and out- reach sessions.
