PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

MARK CAVE PRESIDENT

Certainly leadership is fraught with challenges but I personally believe in Harry S. Truman’s “the buck stops here,” in lieu of throwing somebody else under the bus. All of you have driven your rigs on a line that was not the best one and have been “temporarily immobilized” (never stuck!).

What is great about our sssociation is that we have some pretty fine spotters who can help you get moving again. The hard part is picking which one you will listen to. Over time you find out who you can count on to keep you moving forward with a minimum of damage. I have found this year to be a real learning experience, with more than a few “high centered” moments. Fortunately I have had some great help in keeping the asso- ciation’s wheels turning.

The general news is that we have paid off the office completely (by paying back the loan we made to ourselves from savings). It is a tremendous accomplish- ment and we owe much to the members whose vision and hard work made this

possible. We have finished organizing our files

thanks to Bonnie Steele and her volun- teers and we are preserving our history. We have a tremendous resource thanks to her efforts. Frank Funk, North District VP has started the Yellow Bandana campaign through the Cal 4 Foundation and is recruiting clubs to help educate the pub- lic with this great effort.

It is the 25th anniversary of our last Long Range Plan and I am asking help from members and clubs in updating it this year. Randy Burleson pulled off Sierra Trek with his great team, in spite of a very late snow pack. It was an incredible feat given the amount of snow last year and a real accomplishment. It was odd to have the opposite problem at Winter Fun: no snow. We still had a lot of fun. High Desert Roundup was pretty

windy, but a successful event thanks to Val and Dave Henry and many others. PVD was better weather and well attend- ed also thanks to Traci and Guy Longley. Bob Reed did double duty with merchan- dise and Sweepstakes Jeep tickets there,

SAFETY REQUIREMENTS

All vehicles must be maintained to conform to highway safety standards, as well as meet the minimum requirements listed below:

1. Roll bar or full cage or factory installed hard top. 2. Emergency brake, parking brake, line-lock or other redundant braking system. 3. Tow strap or rope (recommend rated at 2 times the vehicle weight). 4. First aid kit. 5. Jack capable of lifting the vehicle and a tool capable of removing lug nuts. 6. Spare tire within 3” diameter of other tires, or, for tires 37” or larger, run-flats or tools to repair/reinflate tire.

7. Fire extinguisher with gauge indicating good/full, appropriately stored. 8. Seat belts for all passengers. 9. Antennas must be rigid or restrained in a manner to prevent injuries. 10. Adequate attachment points front and rear, i.e., tow hooks, receiver, etc. Tow balls are not generally recommended. 11. Battery hold downs (no bungie cords).

which helped make things very success- ful. Angela Cook pulled off another fine Operation Desert Fun this year. In the Central District, Molina was held again at Hollister Hills SVRA, and was a big hit with all that attended thanks to Steve Egbert and his crew. Alan Spires brought fresh ideas to the High Sierra Poker run, which made it a success. I wish I could say I attended all of these events, but I did get to each district this year in addition to Cantina, TDS’ Chile Cook-off, SEMA, NAMRAC, CAMRC, Frasier Park Fiesta Days, San Joaquin and Sacramento Jeepers Crab feeds, the International Sportsman’s Exhibition in Sacramento, eight district meetings, three BOD meetings, the Friends of the Rubicon meeting in Sacramento, and the Cabela’s store in Reno. It has been quite a year and I have met and worked with so many wonderful volunteers and sup- porters. The SEMA team alone included The Morenos, Randy Worley, Jeff Blewett, Steve Egbert, Robert Reed, the Bakers, John Stewart, Frank Funk, my son-in-law Justin Hopper and my wife Amy. I really want to thank Don Spuhler and Frank Funk for their help at Cantina on the ‘Con and RTF for the invite. Joining the Board this year will be Linda Wucherpfennig as SD secretary/
