LETTER TO THE EDITOR Mike Hardy remembers another long-time event


In response to Bob Alexander’s story on the Tierra del Sol run turning 50!! Congratulations TDS! [Editor’s Note: See the February/March 2012 edition of the In Gear.]


The first Hemet Jeep Cavalcade was spearheaded by the Hemet Chamber of Commerce and the Borrego Springs Chamber of Commerce to connect the farmlands of the desert to Los Angeles produce buyers. The Hemet Jeep Club was first called the Hemet Cavalcaders. This route was to start at Coyote Canyon and take you to Anza, Calif. The Hemet Chamber of Commerce with the force of Chamber President Art Williamson had the money approved to pave and make the road improvements. Somehow the force was stopped and the route remains as it did back then. But since 1996 it has not been a through route. You can go from Anza to Baileys Cabin. But you must then turn around and go back the way you came. The riparian wetlands, bighorn sheep, and Bell’s Lest Vireo(bird) were the reasons they gave for closing the


route to through traffic. You could also start from Borrego Springs and go up the bypass and turn around before the middle willows.


In 2004 Jim Arbogast, CORVA, Hemet Jeep Club and many more arranged for Daphne Green to fly to Ontario and Jim Arbogast picked her up and brought her to Aguanga where he was met by the Hemet Jeep Club (40 vehicles strong) and took her to Bailey’s Cabin and walked her through our proposed bypass!! Coyote Canyon middle willows area. We had linen covered tables, pas- tries, juice and coffee at Baileys cabin. Some of the items brought down in Bob&Yolie Bindels pickup truck? Then Mike Ledbetter(Tri-Tip Cooker) met us at a members home in Borrego and made Tri-Tip and all the fixins!!! I do not know how Daphne had the nerve to tell us NO way are we making a bypass when she was wined and dined by such a great group of off-roaders?


She said the route had been closed “Too Long!” the Parks Dept. closed it to


do a study and then kept it closed!! At any rate Hemet Jeep Club is one of the oldest Jeep Clubs in the United States. Tierra del Sol of San Diego and Sareea Al Jamel of Indio are among the oldest too. There is a club in the State of Washington that says it is the oldest.... but the dust hasn’t settled on that one yet!

P.S. The Coyote Canyon was closed in 1975 for the Bighorn Sheep. It remained closed until a member of the Hemet Jeep Club singlehandedly made a few phone calls and got the Hemet Chamber of Commerce to sponsor the event and it was a through route from 1985 to 1996. The Hemet Jeep Cavalcade has had as many as 500 jeeps (four-wheel drive vehicles) on a single run. It is a run greatly missed and many memories are held by the families that have made the adventure!
