8 - March 16, 2012 | Hudson - Litchfield News Mirabella and Richardson Take Home Crowns at Mr. AHS 2012

Another popular performance among the audience was senior Sean Dunn, who danced, dressed like Pokemon character Ash. Several students disguised as other Pokemon characters then came on stage and danced before they all ran out through the crowd. “It was not his usual attire. He went out of the box on it,” said Senior Zach Prescott. Other highlights of the evening include Kevin

by Tom Tollefson and Katie Wagner The Alvirne High School Mr. AHS competition

was a well-rounded mix of poets, singers, actors, and dancers. The contest had nine contestants, yet when all was said and done, senior Matt Richardson was crowned with the annual Mr. AHS crown for his vocal and guitar play of the song “Man Who Can’t be Moved,” originally performed by the band Script. According to Richardson, his victory came as a surprise. “I didn’t expect it. I thought I would just go up

there and whatever happened, happened,” said Richardson. Many of the audience enjoyed his musical talents and were happy with the outcome. “It was awesome and actual talent unlike most of the other contestants,” Senior Stephanie Langlais said. School Resource officer John Mirabella, one of the newest members to the Alvirne staff, took the crown for Mr. Senior AHS. For the first part of Mirabella’s act, he sang a Wild West cowboy type song about his days at Alvirne titled “Big John.” For a climax to his act, he danced and sang the famous song “La Bamba.” The only other competitor for Mr. AHS was Science teacher Adam Goldstein, who recited poetry.

Pierre’s dance to the song “Sexy and I Know It” by LMAFO, two different comical songs about Alvirne high school by Dan LeBourdais and Kyle King, TJ Hebert’s non-speaking comical skit about the struggles of impressing girls, Steve Tsouprakos’ vocals while clothed in a dress, Nicholas Sweeney’s dancing, and Conen Maina’s moon walk dance to Thriller by Michael Jackson. “We had a lot of fun and a lot of laughs and we got to see a side of the kids that we don’t see every day,” said Judge Kathy Bouchard, Alvirne School Librarian. Senior Class advisor Ellen Fernette selected a panel of four students and four staff members to judge the competition. The evening also featured Alvirne’s 10th annual

Prom Fashion Show. Alvirne’s seniors modeled gowns from David’s Bridal in Nashua and tuxedos from Men’s Warehouse in Nashua and Anne’s Florals in Hudson provided the boutonnières and corsages. Salon 25 in Hudson also did the hair for several of the girls in the fashion show. After the fashion show, the contestants reappeared on stage to show off their casual wear and answer a question picked out of a bowl, although some of the casual wear wasn’t really what you’d call causal. Nicholas Sweeny sported a pink whoopee cushion, Sean Dunn wore a

karate gi, and TJ Hebert showed off his Alvirne spirit by strutting on stage dressed as a bronco. At the end of the night, Sean Dunn won Mr. Congeniality and Dan LeBourdais won the “People’s Choice” award.

GMS Students Perform in Sixth Annual Play of The Crowded House

submitted by Sarah Llewellyn Ms. Llewellyn’s third grade class at Griffin Memorial School recently performed in the sixth annual play of The Crowded House, a book from their reading series. The story tells of a very large family living in a very small house. Through a series of visits, the wisest man in the village, Bartholemew, instructs the family to bring their farm animals in to the already crowded house. On the last visit he sends the animals back to the barn, and in turn the family learns a valuable lesson; be thankful for what you have. now attending Middlesex Community College (Bedford, MA) to study Graphic Design. He loves the outdoors and wilderness and is grateful Troop 20 largely brought him to nature. Phil’s biggest passion, however, is railroads, especially steam engines. He is an active volunteer at both the WW&F (Wiscasset, Waterville & Farmington) railroad in Wiscasset, ME, and the Valley Railroad Co. in Essex, CT, where he helps with antique locomotive restoration and operations. In winding around the last trail bend, Phil confessed he’s “pleased and proud of his trail project.” He shared “the best part is – ‘I had this idea,’ and Troop 20 responded, “OK, let’s help you get there.” Christopher acknowledged many to thank including his Eagle Advisors (Mr. U, Mr.

H, and Mr. Q), Mr. Z, his family and scout work crew, along with Dave Yates, Wally’s Pizza, John Smith and town officials.

While Phil humbly appreciates his past accomplishments, he excitedly looks to the future. He hopes to lead younger scouts in merit badge work and build a steamboat (ala African Queen) to conquer “Philligan’s Island” at an upcoming Troop 20 Millinockett ME, canoe trip. He also wants to travel to Wales and New Zealand, where he someday wants to build a stone yurt on the south island.

At the Eagle court, Mr. Z concluded, “Scouting has been around for more than 100 years and will be another 100. It works because it is ‘paid forward;’ Scouting is great not because of what you take out of it, but because of what you put back into it.”
