“Every organization that wants

to be around long term needs an endowment fund,” says J. Hume Taylor of Norfolk, the Mary Ludlow Home trustee who recommended placing funds at the Foundation to benefit ForKids. “ForKids is a marvelous organization. The beauty of the community foundation is that it can take care of this fund forever.” Each year ForKids will receive an annual percentage of the Mary Ludlow Home endowment -- about $45,000 to start. The amount will increase as the endowment grows

over time. Yearly grants will help ForKids provide services to homeless families. “We are fielding about 160 calls

a day from new families needing help,” says Thaler McCormick, ForKids executive director. Balancing ForKids’ budget is tough due to cuts in federal funds and the recent recession that has made it difficult for people to be charitable when they are struggling.

The new endowment “is an extra-

ordinary gift that is an investment in ForKids’ future,” McCormick says. s
