Richard Turner: A Celebration

7.30pm Duke’s Hall Tickets £25 (£20 concessions) from the Academy’s Box Office, see page 32. You can now buy tickets at any time from www.ram.ac.uk/events

This evening’s concert is to commemorate the life and music of the brilliant young trumpet player and Academy alumnus Richard Turner, who died in August 2011 at the age of 27.

Money raised from this concert is going towards a jazz scholarship in Richard’s name. Head of Jazz Nick Smart writes: ‘In his musical career, and through his work as an imaginative and supportive concert promoter, Richard gave so much to the musical community — this is our chance to create something in Richard’s memory in return for his dedication.’

Museum

The Royal Academy of Music’s Museum is an integral part of Academy life. The galleries include instruments, manuscripts, images and other artefacts. The permanent and temporary displays include material from the Academy’s Library special collections, which have received the sought-after ‘Designation’ chartermark of national importance administered by Arts Council England (ACE). It is also an Accredited Museum, achieved through demonstrating best practice in museum management, user services, visitor facilities and collections care. The Museum regularly hosts lecture-recitals, seminars, workshops and other events (see this diary and our website for details). These events include performances and draw upon items from the Academy’s collections. More information about the Museum, its collections and activities is available via www.ram.ac.uk/museum. Our temporary exhibition on Dickens and Music runs from 2nd May to 1st September.

The Museum is open every weekday (11.30am–5.30pm) and on Saturday (12.00 noon–4.00pm). Admission to the Museum and to all Museum events is free.

The museum will be closed for refurbishment work from Friday 23rd March to Tuesday 24th April inclusive.

Friday 13th to Sunday 15th July Musical Theatre Cabaret Weekend Vocal Workout

Venues around the Academy To apply, visit www.ram.ac.uk/vocalworkout, email vocalworkout@ram.ac.uk or telephone 020 7873 7379. Application deadline: Friday 18th May.

If you are 16 or over, whatever your musical background, you can apply to take part in our annual vocal workout. The weekend aims to raise your level of ‘hard’ musical skills — rhythm, pitch, ensemble singing and more — through creative work together. You will have a chance to explore musical theatre, gospel, rock & pop and jazz singing, as well as performing in a masterclass. The weekend will be run by leading voice specialist Mary King and supported by other top vocal professionals.

Comments from previous weekends: ‘A completely inspirational and magical weekend.’ ‘The course was even more fun and challenging than I expected. I was amazed at how much I learned over the course of two days with such wonderful and engaging professionals.’
