Extreme Cowboy Challenge H
CRAIG CAMERON’S Comes to Northern California
ang on to your hats! The Hooves N’ Irons Extreme Cowboy Challenge is coming to Cottonwood, CA on Saturday, May 26, 2012. This is an exciting, fast-paced race against the clock, where riders compete for money and the glory of being named the Extreme
Providing “hot as a pistol commentary” for the race is Craig Cameron, the creator of the sport of Extreme Cowboy Racing. Craig, who’s known as the “Cowboy’s Clinician,” is considered to be one of the finest horsemen in the country. He’s a member of both the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame and the Culver Riding Academy Hall of Fame. Learn more about Craig at
www.craigcameron.com.
An Extreme Cowboy Race challenges both horse and rider as they maneuver through a series of obstacles while demonstrating their horsemanship skills and speed. The primary purpose of this sport is for competitors to have fun with their horse while improving their horsemanship skills.
The obstacles that riders encounter during a race are similar to what a rider might find out on a trail ride or while doing daily ranch work. At each obstacle, the horse and rider are judged on three components: the approach to the obstacle, the obstacle itself, and the departure. A score is given for each obstacle, based on overall horsemanship and speed.
JOIN THE RACE! Craig Cameron invites you to come out and compete in Hooves N’ Irons. The race is open to riders of all disciplines and horses of all breeds, but western style clothing and tack are required. Riders need to be ExCA members (see sidebar at right); if you’re not a member, you can buy a 30-day Greenhorn membership for $35 that can later be converted to a full mem- bership. The race entrance fee is $135 ($35 for Young Guns aged 7 to 11). There’s a limit of 40 riders.
The competition has five divisions: Pro, Ride Smart, Non-Pro, Novice, and Young Guns. There’s one full go for each contestant, and the top 25% in each division return for a second go. A $1,000 guaranteed cash payout will be offered, and buckles will be given to first and second place, cash to third place, and awards through sixth place in each division.
Get some extreme practice! Prior to race day—from May 23 through 25—Craig will be conduct- ing an official Extreme Cowboy Race Clinic at Cottonwood Creek Equestrian Center. After race
day, you can join Craig from May 27 through 29 for his Working Horsemanship Clinic.
CHEER ‘EM ON! Bring a comfy chair on race day and watch all the action—it’s just $12 and kids 12 and under are free. Vendors will be selling their wares, and food and drinks will be available.
LOCATIONS The Extreme Cowboy Race Clinic and the Working Horsemanship Clinic will be held at Cottonwood Equestrian Center, 18850 Evergreen Road, Cottonwood, CA. The race itself will be held at CPR Ranch at 23510 Dersch Road in Anderson, CA.
