WHAT’S ON Festival Friday 13th - Sunday 15th April
Ponty Fest Pontypridd High School Playing Fields, Cilfynydd, Pontypridd
CF37 4SF Pontypridd has a new festival which offers visitors and residents of the Rhondda Valleys three days of music and sport with the chance to help a very good cause – and it’s all free for visitors. Pontyfest is the brainchild of Mark Lewis who set up the festival to raise vital funds for charity to help the children of northern Uganda. Between April 13th – 15th he’s staging a full-on festival with a line-up of bands, arts, crafts shows and rugby and football tournaments giving valleys sporting outfits the chance to win some local bragging rights. Already booked to play on Friday night are local rock outfit The Greyskulls and bluesabilly combo The Irascibles featuring not one but two former members of Cardiff’s legendary Young Marble Giants. The evening closes with an acoustic set from pop punksters Man of the Hour. Saturday night features a trio of top local cover bands: The Guy That Gets The Girl, The Silverbacks and The Duplicates who between them cover everything from Kanye West to Led Zeppelin. Man of the Hour will also close the second night. For those looking for a bit of physical exertion the five-a-side football and rugby sevens tournaments are a must – these two events are likely to be oversubscribed so if you want to get involved head to the website and register as soon as possible. Pontyfest is aimed at all the family and there will be an array of arts and crafts stalls to browse as well as some mouth watering food from Belgian chocolates to dough balls. Oh, and there’s a bar of course. Stands at the event are also filling up quickly, so if you want to find, display or sell at Pontyfest then get your skates on. The charities benefiting from this new family event are the Gulu Mission Initiative which is helping change the lives of children in northern Uganda – a country that’s been ravaged by years of conflict – through education and community projects. PONT is a local charity linking Rhondda Cynon Taff with Mbale in Uganda. Head along to the website or find Pontyfest on Facebook for the latest news. Website:
