wads and, with some super- magnum loads, the shot load is further protected with a special lightweight plastic-polymer buff ering compound that helps maintain patterns at extended range.
NONTOXIC LOADS
T e science requiring a change to nontoxic shot is patchy but its use against some quarry species and over some types of land and water is now increasingly mandated. Most major cartridge makers
off er nontoxic alternatives, with steel being the least expensive and most widely available. Being so hard this requires very strong plastic-cup wads to protect the gun’s barrel bores from contact with the steel shot and velocities are high to achieve retained killing energy at extended range. Other nontoxic options
include bismuth, tin and some very clever tungsten and polymer mixes such as Hevi-shot. All of these are much more expensive than steel (or lead) shot. Bismuth and tin have the
advantage of being suffi ciently soft to be suitable for use with

fi bre/felt-wad cartridges and some loads in older guns. Nontoxic cartridges, other than steel, cost a lot more than lead types but can give good performance and better margins.
SLUG AND SPECIAL LOADS
Slug loads, of which the Brenneke is probably best known, give shotguns enormous knockdown energy approaching a high-power rifl e. Accuracy
can be good out to 150 yards or so but not in the rifl e class, so they must be used with care and against suitable quarry species. T e slug will also travel vastly further than normal pellets, so extra care regarding the background is required. Some modern slug designs have plastic-sealing cups attached for extra gas-sealing properties and a stabilising rear skirt in fl ight. Special shotguns for their use are typically called slugsters.
Other special loads can
contain rubber pellets for home defence or riot control, while others are designed for police and military roles in gaining access to buildings or stopping vehicles.
ESSENTIAL
Cartridges are something customers need to keep coming back for. T ey, therefore, represent a good opportunity to get to know your customers and sell them something else too!
