Vic-Tas Branch Report, by Michael Bakhaazi

Congratulations to all engineers Your passion towards protecting your qualifications is to be commended. The message that you are sending to AMSA, shipowners and politicians will be appreciated not only by the current members but by future members of this great and irreplaceable institution. The fight is not over yet but the pressure must be maintained and increased to new heights. Your officials whether paid or honorary are there for you at every stage of this fight. In the UK, there is an often- used proverb which runs: ”a problem shared is a problem halved”. So together we will make them all understand that we will never give up the fight no matter what it takes. Keep the pressure on and never concede defeat. Your Institute has survived for 131 years and will survive another 131 years with your support and understanding. Remember that it is better that you have tried and lost than not to have tried at all.

Hobart meeting

AIMPE visited Hobart on Monday 27 February and met with members at the Grand Chancellor Hotel, below. The meeting was well attended considering that it was arranged on the hop. Number

Above, members turned out in force for the Melbourne February MDM

one on the agenda was the attack on marine engineers’ qualifications. The passion shown at this meeting and the message delivered to you all is to keep the pressure on until the attacks on qualifications stops set the whole tone of what to occur the following day in Melbourne. The meeting in Hobart was made possible by quick thinking by Simon Gould. The Melbourne meeting was well attended with over 40 members and their voices were heard that” They will not accept a reduction in standards on marine engineers qualifications which will mean a reduction in safety

standards”. Without proper engineering qualifications dangerous decisions will be made. By not getting the right people involved, there will be costs blow outs. Let’s get this major reform right otherwise it will affect this whole industry which already is reeling from a shortage of marine engineers.

Transport Safety Victoria AIMPE has lodged your submissions in relation to formalising an agreement to go forward when the National regulator takes over in January 2013 and the overnight payment. Further material will need to be lodged in April of this year. AIMPE thanks you all for your contributions and your steadfastness against all odds.
