personal medical issues with a nurse at the outsourced service and thirdly more unsavoury aspects of the policy, such as, that engineers are to remain on call during periods of sick leave. The Institute has advised disagreement with the new policy and it is anticipated that Svitzer will proceed to implement a policy following a meeting to be scheduled.

Teekay Tugs – Hay Point: Roster Changes

In what is described as a “local management” decision, Teekay has altered the rosters of line boat drivers to incorporate driving tugs. This decision reduces the duty on tugs by 1 week in three for tug drivers. Teekay were immediately reminded that it was obligated to pass on any benefit given to the

other departments (navigation or deck) to engineers. The benefit that arises includes the reduction of drivers duty on the higher work value tugs effectively giving them a pay rise of around $30k through the work reduction. Also this will swing 6 drivers onto the two tugs whereas there are only 4 engineers on the roster. The Institute has asked that the benefit be passed onto the drivers – a formal response is yet to be received from the company.

NT – Perkins/Toll Marine Logistics

Agreement in principle has been reached on the Perkins/TOLL Marine Logistics Agreement for their “northern end” operations that service the various island communities in the Territory

and Gulf. The Agreement will not provide rates of pay for the Kimberley Queen but will cover members working on that vessel in the west coast service. The Agreement provides backdating of wages to December 2010 (other than Kimberley Queen) with increases for all vessels in September 2011 (0.5%) December 2011 (4.5%) for the community service barges. New entitlements include coverage of the s.127/132 of the Navigation Act, over-swing allowance, Darwin home port taxi allowance, hard lying allowance, water quality and workplace delegates rights. In addition the agreement retains the training, Loss of Certificate of Competency provisions and redundancy for all vessels. Members are encouraged to vote to approve the agreement.

Head Office refit The attached picture shows the re-

installing of the awnings on the Head Office building.

The awning removal was one of the first tasks of the refurbishment project – this was done between Christmas and New Year. With the awning off the new guttering was installed – a fundamental problem with the building has been the lack of guttering for the mansard roofing. A scissor lift was used for these tasks. After the guttering the re-painting was commenced. Despite Sydney’s wet summer most of this job has been completed. Our Buckingham St frontage however needs scaffolding because of the electrical wires and a tree in the way.

Internally the re-painting commenced with the stairwell and the bathrooms. The Boardroom was the next space to be painted.

Carpeting will be the next major step although this will not proceed until the painting is completed. Martin Byrne
