HOW PEOPLE HELP Lisa also conquers Kilimanjaro
Local deli and café owner Lisa Salter has returned from climbing the world’s highest free-standing mountain (also the highest mountain in Africa), Mount Kilimanjaro – 5,895m /19,341ft. Lisa, 32 owner of the
Before long, the sun began to rise and my head was above the clouds. I took a couple of moments to appreciate the beauty around me. At Gilman’s Point, the sky looked amazing and after a further hour I arrived at Uhuru peak. I was surrounded by glaciers and became so emotional that I cried. The experience was so overwhelming and a bit like a dream. I was at the top of the world’s tallest free-standing mountain, wow!
Climbing Kilimanjaro has taught me that you can
achieve anything if you want it. It’s just lots of little steps, one at a time. I hope that my story inspires others to do something they have always dreamt about. I am delighted to say that I raised £2,039.84 (plus gift
aid), for the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance. They are an amazing bunch of guys and I hope that others will show them their support.
award winning Pumpkin Delicatessen & Café in Wedmore, Somerset, set herself a big challenge when she decided to do something different with her holiday and completed the Kilimanjaro climb this year. “I was very nervous before
starting, but once I got going I just took each day in my stride. The toughest part was the summit night when, dressed in four layers of thermals, we walked through the night with temperatures
well below freezing (-25ºC at the summit) and then having to walk all the way back to camp. After 14 hours of walking in a day I was shattered. “It was not only a personal challenge, but it was a great test of my mental and physical strength and fulfi lled a lifelong dream.” To date, Lisa has raised over £1,868 for the DSAA. “I have never had to rely on the air ambulance myself but do know a few people that have. I wish to give a huge thank you to everyone who has sponsored me.” If you would like to show Lisa your support, you can still donate via her online fundraising page: www.
