MP ADVISES AWD

Stephen McPartland, MP for Stevenage and an Advisor to the Board of the AWD attended the Worldskills 2011 event at The Excel Centre, London on the 6th October 2011.

Stephen, who has a keen interest in the welding industry wanted to see at first hand, the talent that was on offer at Worldskills. Stephen met a range of industry members and was accompanied by Adrian Hawkins, Chairman of the AWD and founder of Weldability Sif.

Stephen and Adrian have worked closely for a number of years on promoting welding as a skill to young people that can lead to a long successful and rewarding career.

ENCOURAGMENT TO YOUNG WELDERS

Weldability-SIF is helping the NHC (North Hertfordshire College) “Support Young People” Campaign, which welcomes and promotes engagement with employers and organisations by enabling employers to provide the opportunity for students to be recognised on the NHC website and celebrated for their commitment.

Students are encouraged to engage with business and to add value when they are on work placement. Many employers have already given their time and resources to support students and develop their self confidence, persistence and an enterprising attitude.

Weldability-SIF is already working alongside TWI and EAL certification by initiating foundation level welder skills training at Stevenage Skills Centre as a first step towards a full apprenticeship programme.

Adrian Hawkins, Weldability-SIF MD and a former student at Stevenage College said: ”Around 200 existing NHC students will benefit directly and it is clear from demand that many other students will be attracted to the NHC Skill’s Centre in the future.”

Honour for former TWI Chief Executive

Dr Bob John, the former Chief Executive of TWI, was awarded an OBE for services to industry in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list in June 2011.
