The Best of Both Worlds? Part 2

Networked video surveillance systems offer too many benefits to be ignored. As such, they are set to become the technology of choice when considering video-based security. However, presently, many end users have an investment in analogue CCTV which they are loathe to discard, predominantly because it still delivers the levels of performance that were originally specified. Bridging the two technologies, hybrid recorders could offer a much needed solution.

or many years, CCTV has been a cornerstone of modern security solutions. Many users have legacy systems that

have been expanded and upgraded over the years, and represent a significant and valued investment. The popularity of CCTV has been ensured by one simple fact: that the systems get results.

The technology used in CCTV solutions has

developed over the years, and today’s systems are streets ahead of the solutions on offer a decade ago. However, it has to be said that

video surveillance has always required some form of compromise, typically because many sites did not have the budget – or did not face a risk serious enough to justify the budget – to deliver a system that performed to meet all required criteria. The introduction of networked video around a decade ago failed to have a significant impact on the market, because – in truth – the price/performance ratio was well off what it needed to be. However, constant advances in technology, coupled with economies of scale driven from other sectors, mean that the time when networked video surveillance offers benefits is well and truly at hand. For many end users, there are three choices when looking at upgrading or expanding their video systems. The first is to stick with analogue technology. Let’s face facts: there are plenty of people behind bars thanks to 330TVL cameras and 220TVL VCRs, and the technology has advanced significantly in recent years. Analogue video still has much to offer, and will do for a good few years more. The second choice is to tear out existing equipment and cabling infrastructure, effectively writing off functional and effective
