Fans of Japanese animation and comic book art are in for a treat, as Scunthorpe prepares to host its first independent anime and manga event.

Comic belief L

oyal local fans have been working with North Lincolnshire Libraries to organise S- Con, Scunthorpe’s first independently organised anime

and manga event. It follows the demise of Tokyopop,

the publishing company which sponsored the former annual Re-Con event. This drew a crowd of 200 local fans, and organisers promise that those returning will not be disappointed by what S-Con can offer. They have lined up big-name

special guests for the event on 1 April. They include lecturer and consultant in Japanese culture, Akemi Solloway. As part of the event Akemi will run a one-hour Japanese calligraphy workshop, but places are limited. The

ticket price of £7 includes full event entry. Also attending will be artist Sonia

Leong who has won a number of awards. She designed the Catgirl mascot for Watcom-Europe's Manga campaign. Her art has featured in the British film Popcorn and in the sitcom The IT Crowd. Local people can take part in two

art workshops with Sonia. Each workshop has a different focus, and tickets are £10 per workshop (includes full event entry). Booking is strongly recommended as the workshops are expected to be fully subscribed. Fans will also be able to meet

Robert Deas who has been working professionally in the comic/manga world for five years. He works completely digitally. People will have the chance to observe his techniques. Other artists
