Food hygiene

Eat safe F

rom April, over 1,000 food businesses in North Lincolnshire will be awarded a food hygiene

'spot' rating under a new national scheme. The National Food Hygiene Rating Scheme will replace the Scores on the Doors Scheme which has been

run by the council since 2008. The new national award will be

given to all the food businesses in the area that were rated under the star scheme, together with some additional business types. These include smaller supermarkets and all public houses, not just those serving meals. This will increase the number of businesses published in the scheme to just over 1,000. The new green and black

certificates and stickers are being issued in March in time for the official launch at the beginning of April. The scores still range from 5 for the best to 0 for the poorest, but the descriptive wording will change. The council

Food hygiene is becoming easier to spot as places selling food in North Lincolnshire are rated under a new national scheme.

inspects around 1,500 businesses as part of its statutory duty. This ensures that businesses obey current laws and reduces the risk of food poisoning incidents. The inspections are not just about

how clean the kitchen is. They also look at how well they comply with the law requiring them to maintain legal documents such as traceability and temperature records, and also how well they handle the food. Council inspectors check:

 how hygienically food is handled – how it is prepared, cooked, cooled and stored;

Lincolnshire authorities as they also launch the new scheme in April. Hull and East Riding councils are already operating the National Food Hygiene Rating Scheme along with over 180 other local authorities across England, Wales and Scotland. For more information, visit the North
