Chicken love
Viva! life member Beryl Williams was kind enough to send us this picture of her friend holding one of four newly hatched chickens who he rescued from an abandoned building site in India. He fell in love with them and so took them home to
care for.
Viva! cap goes to Peru
Many thanks to supporter Jessica Demetriou for sending us this delightful picture. She was snapped in
Peru, holding a Llama, which is the country’s national animal.
Times are hard but, nevertheless, the EU will spend three million Euros to research 'the potential of insects as an alternative source of protein.' Food experts say that insects would probably have to be disguised for Europeans and used as an additive in burgers and other fast food. In justification it claims that some worms contain three times as much protein as beef per ounce, whilst four crickets have as much calcium as a glass of milk. Prof Marcel Dicke of Holland’s Wageningen University says: “The
most important thing is getting people prepared, getting used to the idea because from 2020 onwards, there won't be much of a choice.” Dicke by name, Dicke by nature – has the eminent prof never heard of pulses?
Chemical Casualties
Following an announcement by Germany's BASF that it will suspend the development of GM crops in Europe, a very disgruntled Monsanto has said it will scrap plans to sell insect-resistant maize in France. Following its record in South America we should all cheer. All over the world Monsanto has promoted its Roundup-ready crops as
the magic wand to increase output. Roundup is a herbicide based on glyphosate which, they say, is utterly benign. Research from the National University in Cordoba, Brazil, disagrees. They have found that is causes genetic damage in mice and amphibians, such as frogs. But that’s not the end. It’s research team has found it also has a

profound impact on human health and can cause asthma, chronic bronchitis, skin and eye irritation, damage to kidneys, liver and nervous system, cancer, child development problems and birth defects. It can also lead to miscarriages and fertility problems. Another reason to slash livestock production and release so much
agricultural land is so that this ludicrous chemical farming can be consigned to history.
