THE POWER CONUNDRUM 04 08

Power – you can’t live with it, and you can’t live without it. It is becoming one of the largest conundrums of our time. Today it seems that as much as we have to thank the industrial revolution for, we have to hold it accountable towards.

But solutions are coming that are helping us ease into the future relationship we all know, but not willingly admit, we will have with power. We may not all have access to renewables, but we could feed energy back into the grid. We can’t all afford oil (or at least won’t be able to afford to in future), but cleaner machines will cut back our reliance on this, and we may have areas of waste, but in 2011, monitoring and measuring tools will soon bring this to light. Things certainly are changing.

In this special Power insert, we explore some of the technological areas in the data center that are directly affected by power, from Switchgear (page 12) to innovations focussed on renewable energy (page 16). We also look at the challenges the industry faces with its older technologies such as diesel generators (that are likely to remain a mainstay, but with some very big changes) and uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) systems, which are becoming more varied every day.

We may not be able to avoid changes to power provisioning but we can certainly learn to applaud the changes the industry is making to advance the space, and prepare data center design for the decade ahead.
