Virtualization is probably a good case in point to highlight just how vital such monitoring tools are becoming in today’s data center. Automation tools are now coming out in this space that reduce the need for human involvement with monitoring outcomes, further enhancing the accuracy of monitoring and the stability of data centers running virtual machines.
In our special look at Monitoring & Measurement, we by no means promote any one such technology for use, be it for your cloud computing, virtualization, smart metering or thermal monitoring efforts. Instead we aim to encapsulate some of the solutions available to you from the market today, and what you could look out for.
Even if you don’t have the budget now, this special insert for DatacenterDynamic’s FOCUS issue 12 could at least put your mind to rest, knowing that things could get that little bit easier in future, despite knowing more ‘simplification’ is just around the corner.

Take a little time to reflect. Just how much has the simplification of IT affected your relationship to it?
For the end user, it has made life all the easier. For the CIO, it could have made the business case more pliable. For the data center operator, however, in many cases, the simplification of IT will only have led to a growing complexity of systems and infrastructure, management and monitoring.
I was at an event recently where this very issue was discussed in detail – things might seem easier, faster, more glossy on the outside but like the manager who gets more staff, more attention to the roles being played outside of their day-to-day care will need to be taken.
You might thank your lucky stars then that vendors are there waiting to cash in on your distress with a new range of management tools and measuring systems that can help keep tabs on various areas within the data center. From the new capabilities created by virtualization to the older, much more understood issues that arise with power and cooling.
