Guildhall Art Gallery Age of Elegance: 1890-1930 Until 28th May

he Guildhall Art Gallery’s new exhibition Age of Elegance celebrates paintings from the fin-de-siècle to the roaring twenties selected from the gallery’s permanent collection, some of which have not been seen by the public for decades.


The highlight and central image of the show is John Lavery’s portrait of his wife Lady Lavery. American-born Hazel Lavery was a celebrated society hostess renowned for her beauty. She was the subject of many of her husband’s portraits and his depiction of her as the personification of Ireland was on the Republic of Ireland’s banknotes until the introduction of the Euro. She entertained and corresponded with many notable figures of her time such as George Bernard Shaw and W.B. Yeats, she taught Winston Churchill to paint and was reputed to be the lover of Irish revolutionary leader Michael Collins. In the gorgeous Portrait of Lady Lavery she is the epitome of elegance and poise, the quintessential woman of her time. To complement the exhibition the Guildhall Gallery has invited
