Fair Funding for Independent Schools Four messages for the Australian Government’s Review of School Funding:
1. Choice in education must continue to be defended under Victorian and Australian legislation
2. Focus funding on students, not schools
3. Schools’ income from parents or elsewhere must not diminish government funding
4. No funding freeze for individual schools.
Facts Parents contribute after-tax dollars to Independent schools because they provide educational philosophies and cultural, social and religious values that meet families’ needs.
Not-for-profit Independent schools use their funds to deliver quality education.
Educating students in government schools costs governments much more than funding students in Independent schools because parents make up the difference.
The Victorian Government would have to find an additional $10 million a year if just 1000 non-government students moved into government schools.
Figures Government school students in Victoria get nearly twice as much government funding as Independent school students.
In Victoria in 2009, on average: Each government school student received $9470 Each Independent school student received $5310.
This saved taxpayers $4160 per student - a total of $500.3 million.
Independent schools receive: 68.6 per cent of income from parents and other sources 24.6 per cent from the Australian Government 6.8 per cent from the Victorian Government.
Over a third of Victoria’s students attended non-government schools in 2008-9 but received just over 20 per cent of government funding.
In Summary
All children are entitled to government support for their education.
No student should be worse off because of changes to government funding.
Students with special needs require increased funding no matter what school they attend.
