I hope that all of you have started to get comfortable with MENC’s rebranding to NAfME and that you have looked into “Groundswell” on the NAfME website to enhance your ability as an advocate for music education, in our state and nationally. Change is never easy, but the changes that we are experiencing are really beneficial.

We have experienced a lot of change in recent years in MMEA. As a result of those changes and the mere passing of time, we find that the documents that govern our organization are in need of revision. A sub- committee of the MMEA Board has been working on the revisions and the full MMEA Board will do a first review of the proposed changes to the MMEA Constitution, By- Laws, and Board Job Descriptions during the January meeting at MMC. When the Board has finished its work, the documents will be available on the MMEA website so that all members can review them and then vote on whether or not to accept the changes. I hope that all of our members will take the time to be a part of this process so that you can become better acquainted with the way that our organization functions. The input and involvement of every member is important.

In addition to voting on the changes to our governing documents, it is an election year for our MMEA officers. Dan Steele, our Acting-Past-President will be overseeing the elections, as is our custom. If you would like to nominate someone for an office, please send those nominations to Dan. He and Cory Micheel-Mays, our Executive Administrator, will be sharing information about the nominees and the voting process with all of our members via e-mail. So, do not assume that any of the e-mails that you receive from NAfME or MMEA are junk mail. Please read them carefully and be a part of this important process. There will also be information on our website.

If you have not visited the MMEA website lately, please do so soon and make it a habit to return often. Diane Mehringer, our web master, has done exceptional work updating our website and making it a truly valuable resource for our members and potential members . . . and, she has indicated that she has more ideas for growth and improvement. So, the future of our website is bright and exciting. I am so grateful to Diane for the amazing work that she has done.

As I close, I want to draw your attention to the very special article on autism in this issue. Music is an amazing thing and has power beyond our imagining. We are truly lucky to be music educators and to share this gift with the world. n
