by Barbara O’Brien Windham Selectmen are unanimous in their support of a local business owner who might be on the verge of eviction from the location where he has sold flowers and produce for the past two decades. The issue was brought to the attention of selectmen by State Representative Charles McMahon. McMahon also served previously as a Windham Selectman. During their board meeting on March 5, McMahon told selectmen he was asking for their support in contacting the New Hampshire Department of Transportation, requesting that they not evict Jeff Pelletier, proprietor of Windham Farms, which is located on Range Road, across the street from the McDonald’s Restaurant. Referring to Windham Farms as “a rural oasis,” McMahon told

town officials that the original farm stand at that location goes back about 60 years. Pelletier has operated the existing business since 1992. The business thrived, McMahon explained, until the State Department of Transportation (DOT) began road construction in the area a couple of years ago. As part of the Route 111 bypass construction, the property on which Pelletier’s business is located was purchased by the State of New Hampshire. Windham Farms was allowed to remain, however, based on a lease agreement. As the result of the road construction, however, Pelletier’s income

was adversely affected and he gradually got behind in the lease payments he was expected to make to the DOT. “It was absolutely debilitating,” McMahon said. “People were afraid to even drive

in,” Pelletier said, noting the towering pile of road construction materials that graced the property. Pelletier also lost most of the access points to his business. “Some days I couldn’t even figure out how to get in there, myself,” he said. Pelletier has had a year-to-year lease on the property since the

DOT purchased the land, with monthly payments of $800. With the decline in business caused by the road construction, however, he gradually wound up being arrears in those payments. He eventually managed to catch up on $8,500 in lease payments, but still owes the DOT $8,400. After the road construction was completed last year, Pelletier hoped to re-establish his business. “It takes time to rebuild,” Pelletier told selectmen. “It doesn’t just happen overnight.” Last week, however, Pelletier was notified by the DOT that he

would be evicted from the premises as of March 5. That’s when he contacted Representative McMahon and asked for his help. “Mr. Pelletier has provided a valuable service to the residents of

Windham for many years,” McMahon said. “Compassion needs to play a role in this.” “Mr. Pelletier is an honorable man, who provides a quality product,” McMahon continued. “He will pay what he owes, if he’s given the chance to do so.” Requesting the support of selectmen, McMahon proposed sending a letter to DOT officials asking them to give Pelletier until June 1 to catch up on his lease payments and also to allow him to continue conducting his business at the current location until continued to page 8 - Selectmen Show Support
