by Robert Horne Firefighter, NREMT Paramedic, BS Helping During an Emergency
by Robert Horne, Firefighter, NREMT Paramedic, BS Welcome to the second installment of Flashover. I would like to talk to you about how you can help us at the Pelham Fire Department in the event that you or a loved one has a medical emergency. Once dispatched for a medical call, we will send an ambulance and a fire engine, each staffed with two medically trained firefighters. Often a police officer will respond as well. Medical emergencies often require a lot of manpower to move a patient, equipment, gather information and properly care for the patient. Here is a list of things you can do before and during an emergency to expedite this process and make the emergency run smoother. 1. Call 911. This may seem obvious but often people call the fire station directly. We are not always in the building. This could cause a delay in your care.
2. Make sure your home and mailbox are properly numbered and visible from the road. Struggling to accurately locate your home cause’s delays. If your street sign is missing, contact the Pelham Highway Department as soon as possible.
3. Have an updated medication list readily available. This list should include medication names and doses, the patient’s name, date of birth, known allergies and medical history. Don’t forget to include over-the-counter medications and vitamins. If it is handwritten, make sure it is legible. If the family member is transported frequently it may be a good idea to have more than one copy of this information on hand. Consider getting a “Vial of Life.” Information may be found at www.vialoflife.com
or you may obtain a Vial of Life packet at the Pelham Fire Department.
4. In winter months, make sure the stairs, driveway and walkway are cleared of snow and ice.
5. If you or your loved one has any special needs or health issues, feel free to contact the Pelham Fire or Police Departments with this information as well as emergency contacts that may be needed. Having this information beforehand is helpful. We would be happy to visit your home beforehand to assist you.
6. Secure all pets for the safety of the pets and first responders. 7. If you or your loved ones have documents such as Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) orders or Advanced Directives, make sure they are available for the responders to see. A DNR order must be present in order for it to be honored. DNR bracelets are also available and can be honored by responders when worn by the patient.
8. Stay calm. If your loved one is sick or injured, they are depending on you to help us help them.
9. Keep your home neat and access to doors clear so we can safely move you or your family member from the home to the ambulance.
10. Be patient, it may seem as if we are asking a lot of questions, but this information is important for the care of you or your loved one. If you need any further clarification on the information that I have
provided please contact us at the Pelham Fire Department at 635-2703 or at email@example.com
. Please e-mail me with questions or topics that you would like me to address in future installments. And a huge thank you and goodbye to our beloved office manager Maureen McNamara who has retired. We welcome our new “Mom” Lisa Owens to the Pelham Fire family. Next month’s column will be “A Day in the Life of a Firefighter.”

On Friday, March 2, at approximately 9:28 p.m., the Pelham Police and Fire Departments responded to the area of 22 Quail Run Lane for a report of a snowmobile crash. The status of the male operator’s condition was unknown as it was not clear if he was conscious or breathing. The male subject was still in the roadway at the time of the call. Upon arrival at the scene, both Pelham
Police Officers and the Pelham Fire Department began to give medical aid to the male subject who was in the roadway who was conscious and bleeding from the head. The male subject was later identified as 51 year old Ronald Skinner of Pelham. Skinner had sustained extensive head injuries as a result of the crash. Skinner was stabilized and transported to Lowell General Hospital by the Pelham Fire Department for his injuries. A preliminary accident investigation conducted by the Pelham Police Department revealed that Skinner was operating a 2011 Polaris IQ-LXT snowmobile without a helmet in the area of 22 Quail Run Ln. As Skinner exited the snow covered grass in that area and onto the paved portion of the roadway, he was ejected from the snowmobile and onto the pavement, making contact with his head. The snowmobile did not receive any damage in the event. The crash is still under investigation at this
time. Speed and/or alcohol do not appear to be contributing factors.
